SPOILERS!!! Don’t read unless you want to know the events of the Episode.
This is the fifth installment of What If season three. The episode takes on a much darker tone than the previous episode. The episode follows Riri Williams voiced by Dominique Thorne, she is a young genius and the world’s final hope. In this universe, the Emergence happened earlier than expected. The emergency for anyone is the destruction of Earth by the awakening of a Celestial (The same people from episode 2) from inside the planet. Quentin Beck has become a dictator over the remainder of the world and he uses his technology for evil. Riri joins the residence and eventually fights Quentin. She is about to lose but the Watcher breaks his oath and tells her to continue fighting.
The episode is a fantastic middle episode for this reason, with hints of the future being sprinkled in. You feel the emotion of Riri after she has lost everything she loves. The episode was quite emotional as well. The death of major characters and the uneasiness of who is real is a really interesting plot. The ending also is amazing with the Watcher helping her, after seeing hundreds of the same events. characters such as Wong, Xalkori, and White Vision were also fun to watch.
The grittiness of the episode and the setup for future episodes give this one a high rating. I’ll give it 4.5/5 ☆’s.
Tomorrow’s episode is Episode 6: “What If… 1872?” See you then.
