Patriot Press Editor-in-Chief Says Goodbye
June 19, 2015
Patriot Press editor-in-chief Lauren Lavelle is graduating, so to say goodbye, staff writer Hailey Ruderman interviewed her about her time with the newspaper.
What made you get started in newspaper?
“I like to write and there was a journalism class that I signed up for my freshman year. It was all about writing for the newspaper and I just stuck that it after that.”
How long were you an editor before you were editor in chief?
“I was editor of the opinion section last year and that was my first year being an editor. I submitted a paper this year to be an editor and Mr. DiGiuseppe made me editor in chief.”
What did you like most about being editor in chief?
“It taught me how to put myself out there more. I was able to talk to people I’ve never met, teachers I’ve never had and I’ve been able to go to all these events I never thought of going to. It definitely helped me come out of my shell more.”
What was your least favorite thing about being editor in chief?
“It would have to be taking pictures at events because asking people to take pictures without me in them is kind of awkward. It’s like ‘hey, I don’t know you just can I get a picture of you guys?’”
What do you feel like is the most important part of being an editor or editor in chief?
”Definitely making sure you’re on top of something. You don’t want to miss something big. Someone in the newspaper staff had to do an interview on a student getting into an important college and they missed the speech. You want to make sure you get to every school event and everything important.”
Do you have any advice for the upcoming editors and editor in chief?
“Just to make sure to talk to Mr. DiGiuseppe and ask him any questions you have. KEEP WRITING. It’s best if you turn in an article every 2-4 weeks.
What’s your favorite article you’ve ever done?
“It’s a cross between the interview on Sam Famulare and whether or not dance is a sport. I loved writing about them and their topics.”
What’s your least favorite you’ve ever written?
“My article about BOTC and LFD. Neither of them were that good. The one about BOTC was rushed and people were hard to get in touch with because they were always busy and running around like crazy people.”
