Saying that I am disappointed at the Yankees’ performance in the World Series is an understatement. As a lifelong Yankees fan, I am very angry at the way things went. Although we made it to the big game, I thought this was the team that would win it all. It was perfect. Judge vs. Ohtani, two powerhouse teams going at it. And the Yankees would prevail, and win their first since 2009. Well, this is not the way it went. Today, I’m going to give my general thoughts on each game of the World Series, and hopefully maintain my cool when writing this.
Game 1 (6-3 LA): Seriously?
Simple mental mistakes and overthinking are what lost us in this game. The Yankees had a 2-1 lead in the 8th inning, which although uncomfortable, I felt the Yankees’ strong bullpen led by closer Luke Weaver could do the job. However, this was not the case. Ohtani hit a double off the wall with one out. No big deal? Right? Well, when Soto threw the ball to 2nd base, Torres misplayed the ball, allowing Ohtani to reach 3rd. This play allowed Betts to hit a sac fly into center field, tying the game. This game would go into extra innings, where the Yankees scored first off an Anthony Volpe RBI. Perfect! We take the lead! Now let’s send Weaver up to end this thing against the heart of the Dodgers order. Well, Boone had other ideas. He decides to send up Nestor Cortes, a man who has not pitched in a month due to injury. And well, Freddie Freeman took care of that, hitting a walk-off grand slam in the 10th.
This game was heartbreaking, and I felt Boone made some bad decisions. I hated it when he took Cole out, who was having a great game. And although Cortes has a good history against Ohtani, the man hasn’t pitched in a month. Do we think it’s the best idea to give him his first action in the bottom of the 10th inning only up by a run? Seriously? And crucial mistakes like the one I mentioned with Torres were easily avoidable. Not to mention the fan interference in the 9th inning which cost the Yankees a potential game-winning run. After watching this game, I had a bad feeling in my stomach about how the rest of this series was going to go. And well, I was right.
Game 2 (4-2 LA): Where’s the Offense?
The Yankees only scored 2 runs in this game. That is simply not going to win games. I’ll give credit to Yamamoto who pitched a monster game. But seriously? 2 runs?! That’s all we can give in the World Series. Not to mention, Rodon failed to even go 4 innings, which forced the Yankees to go deep into the bullpen. I didn’t feel there were any major deciding factors in this game like there were in game 1, it just felt that all our life was lost after the heartbreak a couple of days before.
Game 3 (4-2 LA): I’ve Lost Hope
Practically the same thing as game 2, the Yankees could only score 2 runs. Freddie Freeman is lighting it up, and the Yankees can’t score to save their lives. Our starting pitcher this time couldn’t even go 3 innings, which is simply pathetic. Judge still can’t hit a baseball, and it feels like this team is just not doing anything right. Now down 3-0, I’m debating whether to even bother watching game 4.
Game 4 (11-4 NY): So You’re Telling Me There’s a Chance?
This game made me feel better about myself. We didn’t get swept, thank goodness, and we scored more runs in this game than we did in the first 3 games combined, with 11. Gil pitched a good game, and Volpe had a great game, tallying 3 runs, 2 hits, 1 walk, 4 RBIs, and 1 massive grand slam. If we keep this up, maybe we can win the whole thing!
Game 5 (7-6 LA): I Don’t Like 5th Innings
5 earned runs in the 5th inning for the Dodgers. Three errors IN ONE INNING. I cannot describe to you how I felt watching this game. How are we in the World Series as one of the best teams in the MLB giving up five free runs for the Dodgers? That is not how we are going to make a comeback, and not how teams win games in the World Series. Offensively I felt we played fine, and Cole pitched a pretty good game as well. If it weren’t for that horrendous 5th inning, maybe the Yankees could’ve shocked the world and come back. But, we’ll never know.
Freddie Freeman won the World Series MVP, which was well deserved. He played his heart out, and so did the rest of that Dodgers team. The Yankees had chances to win but didn’t want it enough. Now, we focus on the offseason, where the Yankees are going to have to give Soto $700 million so that he can consider staying with us. Don’t worry, we’ll be back soon.
