Diwali, often referred to as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most significant and joyous festivals celebrated in India and by Indian and Hindu communities around the world.
What is Diwali? It symbolizes Prince Rama, his wife, and his brother returning from their 14-year separation and war. The word “Diwali” comes from the Sanskrit word “Deepavali,” which means “row of lights.”
When is Diwali? In 2024, Diwali will be celebrated on Thursday, October 31st. The date is chosen from the Hindu lunar calendar, which is based on the cycles of the moon and sun.
What happens on Diwali? During Diwali, people clean and decorate their homes with colorful sand patterns on the floor (known as rangoli), light oil lamps (known as diyas), and set off fireworks. Families gather to perform puja (prayer) to the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi. Lakshmi is believed to make an appearance and give the gift of money, health, and success to her devotees. They also perform puja to Ganesha, the god of wisdom and remover of obstacles. The festival includes feasting on sweets and savory dishes and exchanging gifts with loved ones.
