Greetings, and welcome back to October Horror Fest! Before I get into it, ladies and gentlemen, I need to level with you all for a second. I did enjoy today’s film. I really did. However, it DRAGGED. It lost my interest unfortunately, and although I did really enjoy it, it was slow. This does not mean I won’t recommend it to you all! But, for me, it didn’t hit amazingly. I have heard the sequel is much better, so we may give that a shot soon. So, I apologize if this review is a little short, or repetitive. Come with me, and let’s dive into the wacky, crazy world of the Addams Family. Without further ado, sit back, relax, turn off the lights, grab some Candy and Popcorn, and let’s review…
The Addams Family (1991)
Our film basically begins like normal, with us meeting the Addams. We all know Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Thing, and the rest. Gomez is depressed about the 25th anniversary of the disappearance of Uncle Fester, and is wishing he comes home. In the beginning, we also met some newcomers. Enter Tully, Abigail, and Gordon. Tully is the Addam’s lawyer, and he WANTS the riches they have stored in the vault. Abigail is a woman he owes money to, and Gordon is her son. But, here’s the catch. The trio plans to steal from the Addams using Gordon. Gordon has a shocking resemblance to Fester, and the plan is to infiltrate the Addams Family using him. And, at the beginning, they’re all in! After a seance that was planned to bring Fester home, Gordon arrives. He immediately blends in with the family, and his mother poses as a doctor that found him. Gordon says that he has been lost in the Bermuda Triangle for the past 25 years. And, everyone believes him.
However, the days begin to go by, and the family begins to grow suspicious of “Fester”. It starts with Morticia, as she notices Gordon’s odd behavior in the night. Then, it passes on to Gomez. During an expedition down into the vault (the first step in Gordon’s plan), Gordon is unable to recall childhood memories and secret passwords that he shared with Gomez. Gomez becomes paranoid, and is convinced that Gordon is an impostor. As this suspicion continues, Morticia warns Gordon never to cross the Addams. Knowing that the Addams are beginning to suspect him, Gordon asks his mother to pose as a Doctor to alleviate Gordon’s fears. She does, saying it’s all because of “displacement”.
A few more weeks go by, and Gordon once again becomes acquainted with the Addams. However, this time, he truly begins to feel like a part of the family. He becomes very close with the Addams children, who finally trust him. He even attends a school play with the family, having previously said he would not go. Abigail begins to take notice of this, and comes back in as the doctor. She says that “Fester” needs to leave, so the Addams send him out in style. The Addams throw a MASSIVE going away party for Gordon, with the entire clan invited. Gordon truly and honestly loves the party, and really feels like he is Fester. After the party, however, Abigail puts her foot down. She begins to discuss the plan once more with Gordon, but Wednesday hears. She runs away from Gordon, and hides, now knowing the truth.
Not all hope is lost for Gordon, as Tully initiates phase two. With the help of the Addams’s disgruntled Judge neighbor, Tully takes the legal route. He says that Fester, as the elder brother, is entitled to the Addams estate. The Judge obviously rules this as correct in court out of spite, and a restraining order is placed on the Addams, evicting them from their own manor.
The Addams end up on the street, as every family member tries to work odd jobs to support. Even Thing (the hand) ends up working. Gomez falls into a depression, and doesn’t want to do anything. While this is happening, Abigail, Tully, and Gordon all try and fail to break into the vault. Eventually, Morticia takes matters into her own hands. She breaks back into her own house, and is captured by the trio. She is tortured, as Gordon grows more and more angry with Tully and his mother. Thing observes this, and runs back to Gomez, giving him the message. Gomez sets out to take back the manor, and save his wife.
Gomez arrives, and after a fight with Tully, is held at gunpoint by Abigail. However, Gordon has had enough. He snaps at his mother, holding a magical book that unleashes hurricanes when it is opened. And, here’s the real kicker. Gordon is truly Fester. He was the whole time. Abigail reveals this to him, saying he’s a disappointment and she should have never taken him in. Fester unleashes the book, and launches Tully and Abigail into graves dug by the children. He is struck in the head with lightning from the storm, which gets rid of his amnesia. We end with a sweet scene seven months later. It’s Halloween, and Fester is finally back with his real family. He plays games with the Children and the Family, as Morticia reveals she is pregnant by Gomez. It’s a happy Halloween for the Addams Family…
And there we have it! I know, this one is short. And I really did like this movie, but it did end up pushing my attention span to its limit. I do recommend it to you all, and I’m sure I will give the sequel a whirl sometime this month. Thank you all for reading! And all of you, remember something about the Addams. They aren’t just a normal family… they’re creepy and they’re kooky…
