The Mets are Back!
April 30, 2015
Spring has sprung and so has baseball season.
In the New York/New Jersey area, the Yankees tend to dominate the sports headlines, but this year, that other New York baseball team is getting some more love: The Mets are back!
Just 22 games into the season, the Mets have already had an 11-game win streak and hold a 15-7 record (while the Yankees have a 13- 9 record). Thanks to the new players like outfielder Michael Cuddyer and catcher Kevin Plawecki, the Mets have been doing extremely well. Returning this year from elbow surgery is pitcher Matt Harvey, and he has been striking people out left and right when he’s on the field; he also earned the Mets win in the second game in the Subway Series against the Yankees.
It’s only the beginning of the season and four Mets players, including captain and third baseman David Wright, are injured; additionally, one is suspended, yet they still have been winning all these games. This has been a shock to everyone, but the Mets fans keep their heads up hoping for a spot in the playoffs, which would be their first appearance there since 2006.
Sophomore Avery Cohen had something to say about this topic. “I like the Mets because they are not always the favorites. When I was growing up I was always a Mets fan, and I loved the fact that maybe someday they would do some good for New York. I’ve always believed that they are the underdogs and that someday they will rise again like in 1969 and 1986. They may not have the best past, but I have quite a good feeling that this is their year.”
This 11-game win streak was one of the biggest topics in baseball for days because people were not expecting this kind of effort from them so early in the season. In recent days, they have come back to earth a bit going 2-4 on their last road trip, including losing 2 out of 3 to the crosstown rival Yankees.
Still, Mets fans are very optimistic for a good year. Sophomore Mike Pirrotta added, “The Mets have a lot of young guys and a great goal every time they step on the field. It should be a fun season to watch.”
Most Mets fans would probably agree…. Here’s to the next 11-game win streak!
