The F*** It List Movie Review
January 22, 2022
Director Michael Duggans 2020 movie, The F*** It List, tells the story of a highschool student Brett Blackmore (Eli Brown). Brett has grown up his whole life under the influence of his parents Jeffrey (Jerry O’ Connell) and Kristen (Natlie Zea). They have molded Brett into this perfect student who gets straight A’s, plays the flute, and is guaranteed to be valedictorian and attend an ivy league school. All his life, Brett has restricted himself from friends, having a social life, and going anywhere, to instead study on that Friday night. He has been so scared all of high school to get a B or do any simple thing wrong. But all of this changes on one simple ordinary Senior Prank Night.
The movie starts off by showing Brett with his parents checking his email to see what colleges he gets accepted into. Brett is sitting at a desk with a computer, along with the parents standing behind him. He starts off by opening the emails one by one, all Ivy League schools. Starting with Cornell, Yale, Brown, Princeton, and Dartmouth. The parents congratulate themselves each time by hugging each other and saying, “WE got into Brown, WE got into Yale,” and completely ignoring Brett. During this scene, Brett feels ignored and neglected because he is not getting credit for the hard work and dedication that he put in, in order to accomplish this. He got admitted to every Ivy but Harvard. Waitlisted.
After finding out about this news, Brett’s parents call the local news station, Brett’s school, and host a party to brag to all of their friends about his accomplishment. Brett does not want this being broadcasted to everyone and unfortunately that is the opposite of his parents ideas.
Bretts friends, Nico (Karan Brar) and Clint Clark (Marcus Scribner), along with the girl he likes, Kayla Pierce, (Madison Iseman) all invite him to come to the Senior Prank Night they organized. They are all going and want Brett to as well, but he instead answers by saying he has a chemistry test he needs to study for instead. They all beg him and insist him to come and eventually he gives in and says he will let them know.
The night of the party, his mother comes up to his room, encouraging him to come downstairs to greet all of the guests. She examples one specific person she wants Brett to see in order to make her jealous. After this comment, Brett decides he has had enough and leaves to attend the Senior Prank Night.
Brett arrives at the school and sees all his friends hanging out. The scene then flips to a bunch of Bretts friends in the principal’s office. They were just rummaging around, and by accident stepped onto a pipe that detached itself from the wall. The friends run out of the school and immediately hunt down Brett and explain they need help. So Brett rushes inside and goes into the office. Brett tries his hardest to help his friends, but sees that gas is pouring into the school and that it will blow up momentarily. The boys all run out of the school and arrive safely outside, just as the school bursts into flames.
You would think that the friends would get blamed for this, although that was not the case. Unfortunately, Bretts face was the only face caught on the security cameras. Because of this, all of the schools Brett got accepted to, canceled and declined him, except for Harvard. In the span of 48 hours, Brett was accepted into all Ivys but one, to then “burning down his school” and getting denied from college.
The story goes on of Brett becoming depressed and miserable and his parents extremely upset. One day Brett posts a video of him talking about all of the things he has always wanted to do. He explains how he never liked playing clarinet but only did because his parents forced him to. He then goes on to say all about the things he wants to do, such as find love.
The video goes viral and everyone starts to post their own lists. He became an inspiration for all of the country. Brands want to partner with him and sponsor him. This is because Brett starts to become famous.
At the end of the movie, Harvard asks for Brett to write them an essay to be accepted into college. Brett writes a long piece but ends it with saying “no thank you” to their invitation. Harvard writes back and says they want him to come. It ends with Brett going to Harvard.
Overall, I think this was a great movie and I highly recommend it. It is a great movie for families, teens, and children. It is a fun movie to watch on a Friday movie night, or just when you’re bored. I highly recommend this movie for all people looking for an enjoyable and fun movie to watch!
