The first monday of May holds a very special place in the world of fashion. On the notable Monday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art holds an exclusive gala to support the opening of the newest costume exhibit. The theme of the 2019 fashion exhibit is “Camp: Notes on Fashion.”
What Is the Met Gala?
Essentially, the Met Gala is an extravagant fundraising event held every year to endorse the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Gala introduces a new costume exhibit where the dress code matches the theme of the artworks. Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, has been a main director of the event for the past five years. With her infamous critical eye, she selects the celebrity guests to the invite-only extravaganza. The hosts for this year, who are all very well known for their style, include Anna Wintour, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, and Alessandro Michele.
“Camp” Explained
The chosen theme for the 2019 Met Gala is “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The theme is derived from the 1964 collection of essays, “Notes on ‘Camp’” by Susan Sontag. Her writings express the meaning of camp and how it extends to all forms of art. “Camp” is described as an admiration for the strange and the outrageous. Often times, the “over-the-top” artworks will use irony to comment on political and social matters. “Camp” works to exceed the limits of expectations. Commonly known examples of camp include, Swan Lake, Andy Warhol’s pop art, and many Gucci fashion shows.
Notable Moments
Anna Wintour wore a pink Chanel ensemble and arrived first, as always. Soon after, Lady Gaga amazed onlookers as she had not just one, but three outfit changes on the red carpet. Her total of four looks were created by Brandon Maxwell. Enchanting the crowd, Zendaya truly shimmered in a Cinderella inspired look. From a wave of a wand and a puff of smoke, Zendaya’s blue-gray gown glowed from the interior, creating a magical scene. A few moments later, her dainty heel slipped off as she ascended the staircase. Overall, the anticipated Monday night stunned the world of fashion and allowed for an escape into the ethereal world of “camp.”
