Kiersten’s Thursday Jams: Valentine’s Day Edition
February 14, 2019
Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! Since it’s Valentine’s Day, today’s edition of “Kiersten’s Thursday Jams” will consist of my favorite love songs to celebrate the holiday. Enjoy!
“Young and Beautiful” – Lana Del Rey

Of course I had to include Lana Del Rey, queen of love songs, in this Valentine’s Day edition of “Kiersten’s Thursday Jams”! “Young and Beautiful” rose to fame not only because of Del Rey’s gorgeous vocals, but because it was featured in the 2013 film The Great Gatsby. Del Rey sings of the perils of young romance with lyrics such as “Hot summer nights, mid-July/When you and I were forever wild/The crazy days, city lights/The way you’d play with me like a child.” Del Rey laments of her fears that her partner will stop loving her once she is no longer “young and beautiful”, as the title suggests. You should listen to this song if you like whimsical music about romance, or amazing vocals.
“Lovefool” – The Cardigans

“Lovefool” is a classic 90’s song about love by one hit wonder The Cardigans. The tune gained a lot of attention due to it being featured in the 1990 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The song consists of enchanting vocals by lead singer Nina Persson, and a bubbly synthesized melody and hints of guitar. The tune also exudes a fun disco sound that was not very typical of songs in the 1990’s time period. You should listen to this tune if you like pop songs, or typical music about love.
“Hot Venom” – Miniature Tigers

Would it really be an edition of “Kiersten’s Thursday Jams” without a Miniature Tigers song? I think not. Their song “Hot Venom” is a sweet tune about falling in love, in which lead singer Charlie Brand compares his partner’s love to “venom”. Brand sings sweet lyrics such as, “Hot venom is mixin’ with my blood/I can feel it on my fingers and taste it on her tongue/It feels so good to fall in love with you.” You should listen to this song if you enjoy lovely lyrics, or metaphorical music relating to love.
“Are You Bored Yet?” – Wallows, Clairo

“Are You Bored Yet?” is a sweet duet between the band Wallows and indie pop singer Clairo. The two sing a bubbly indie pop tune together and partake in gorgeous harmonies. The lyrics tell the story of someone wanting to express their love to their partner, but they aren’t sure if their partner reciprocates their feelings. You should listen to this song if you like fun indie pop music, lovely harmonies.
“That’s So Us” – Allie X

“That’s So Us” is a love song by pop-rock singer Allie X. Allie X calls the tune the most “bubblegum song” that she’s ever written. But, nonetheless, Allie’s pop jam about her lover surely captured my heart. The lyrics of the song describe everything good and bad about Allie X and her partner’s relationship, and why she loves it all. You should listen to this song if you like heartfelt lyrics, or genuine pop songs.
