Flash Fix With Marc Kaliroff: “Lose Yourself” – Season 4 Episode 18

Marc Kaliroff, Editor

The Flash is back once again on The CW. This article covers season four episode eighteen “Lose Yourself.” This was a very eventful episode so here’s the quick recap so we can dive right in.

Recap

Last week Kevin Smith made a special appearance as a security guard and one more metahuman, Null, was taken down by the team. Meanwhile, DeVoe revealed that he has continually hypnotized Mrs. DeVoe every time she attempts to rebel against him.

Episode 4X18 Review “Lose Yourself”

The team prepares to fight DeVoe.

Before we hit the biggest moment in the episode, let’s start with two of the smaller stuff that I thoroughly enjoyed. Harry and the thinking cap. This has been an ongoing addiction for the character, but now he is digging into the next level of insane. My one biggest worry for this episode was that Harrison Wells would have to bite the bullet due to the many metahuman powers that DeVoe has. As DeVoe quickly swept his way through every piece of technology in his raid on Star Labs, I began to have this sudden feeling that Harry would fall victim to the death count because of the thinking cap. How did DeVoe not take over the thinking cap? This plot hole can be argued on both sides of the fence, but I am just glad that he made it out alive because if there is one actor that I absolutely adore on this show it is Tom Cavanagh as Harrison Wells. I was optimistic that he would survive and I am sure that everyone else was too. He is partial to blame for two particular deaths that happened later in the episode, so I am personally left wondering how he will handle both character’s departures.

Iris and the Mechanic have been some of the most intriguing yet lackluster characters from this season. The Mechanic could use a hefty amount of more screen time and Iris just needs to stand down sometimes. “Lose Yourself” perfectly balances the two out, however. It found a way to evenly incorporate the characters while also making them essential parts of the episode. The fight scene between the two was very well done considering what the writers had to work with. The blaster under the table also really shows how far Iris has come as the leader.

Speaking of the fight scenes, I wish we got to see Joe versus the android. Besides shoot-outs, we never get to see Joe fight. This was a perfect moment to let the actor get his hands dirty, but I guess we’ll just have to keep waiting for that moment to happen. The fight scene we did get to see happen, was the showdown between team flash and DeVoe. This scene makes more sense on screen than in text. It perfectly fits the idea of this character being an unstoppable force that truly cannot be out thinked. DeVoe went on a killing spree this episode. If you have not watched the episode yet then do not proceed at all. You can already tell that this episode was worth your time as I really have nothing negative to say about it so just go and watch it already!

Spoiler Alert!

Ralph Dibny and the “Folding Man.”

All twelve victims that the team attempted to save have officially been confirmed deceased. Tonight marked the end of the new metahumans including rogue hero Ralph Dibny. In his final fight against DeVoe, he was not able to stop the powers of Killg%re from deactivating his restraints. Dibny went down right in front of Barry as his mind was taken over by The Thinker. Barry was force to watch Dibny give into DeVoe’s wrath as he was trapped by Null’s density changing abilities. Team Flash, however, took another large hit as DeVoe was able to untangle Caitlin’s DNA connected to Frost. Caitlin Snow may still be alive, but Killer Frost is no more. This was the first episode where two members of the team were killed off at once. Frost’s death was one of the very few that I expected the show to execute. On the other hand, Ralph’s death was certainly fitting for the character; he was on a mission to kill DeVoe, but once again he proved that the right way is not always the correct one. Through the team’s way of justice, Ralph met his ultimate fate. DeVoe now has the ability of all twelve metahumans and the dark matter from Harry’s thinking cap.

Verdict

This was a fantastic episode. This is The Flash I have been waiting to see. It has just the right amount of comedy, action, and scientific nonsense to justify all your needs. Besides some questionable digital effects towards the middle of the episode, this was certainly a treat. I can not wait to see how the final five episodes will wrap up the DeVoe story arch. This might be my second favorite episode of the season. Next week is about to get chilly so expect a lot of puns. It is time for the yearly Captain Cold episode!
