Erica’s Friday Playlist: 12/9/16

Erica Singh, Staff Writer

Hi! I’m going to tell you a little bit about myself before getting started. My name is Erica Singh. I’m a junior and I love music. I love listening to it, I love writing about it. I just like connecting with the vibes they give me. Every Friday, I am going to give you a playlist of all of my favorite songs I listen to, along with a description of them so you can learn about them. I hope this can get you into different genres of music or to start liking a certain band or artist. Here is my playlist, I hope you enjoy!

“Mrs. Potato Head” by Melanie Martinez
This amazing song has a beautiful meaning to it. This song talks about the struggles of being a female and how it seems as you have to change yourself or you’re not good enough. Throughout the music video, Melanie is seen watching television of a woman falling in love with a man but he told her she had to change herself so she decided to get plastic surgery just to be completely ignored by everyone in the end. This song really teaches young women not to change their looks and it teaches everyone that being YOU is good enough and you shouldn’t have to change yourself to be a certain stereotype.

“Friend, Please” by Twenty One Pilots
This song is strictly a message to all of those who struggle to find purpose in life, if anyone has a friend in need of advice and have no one to go to they will hopefully listen to this song and realize that there are people out there who care about them, that there always is hope and that you should never give up.

“False Prophets” by J.Cole
I personally love this track off of J.Cole’s new album, many people think its a diss track meaning he is talking about someone in a negative way. Most people think this song is an indirect toward Kanye West because J. Cole says, “When he tell us he a genius but it’s clearer lately / It’s been hard for him to look into the mirror lately.” Nobody really knows who he is talking about. J. Cole has neither confirmed nor denied who the song is truly about and if it is about Kanye West.

“All Time Low” by Jon Bellion
(I can officially say i’ve liked this song before it blew up!!!) Basically, this upbeat (but sad) song is about the singer, Jon Bellion, having a past with someone and they have clearly forgot about him while he struggles to move on. Jon explains throughout the song where he’s at the part after a breakup where he’s at his “all time low” because he misses his former partner.

“Emperor’s New Clothes” by Panic! At The Disco
This song is definitely one of my top favorite Panic! At The Disco songs. The lead singer, Brendon Urie, explains throughout the song how he is “taking back the crown.” Many people believed the theory is that it’s an indirect to the former members of the band. The video changes everyone’s views though. The video starts off with the ending of another song titled “This Is Gospel” which talks about fighting for the ability to love. The video quickly spirals downward when Brendon is seen falling into the setting of hell. The entire video and song is about fighting for power, and toward the end Brendon is seen standing in front of the camera, wide-smiled, as the door opens up to exactly what he wanted throughout the song; power.
