Must-Watch Movies of Halloween

John Ross, Staff Writer

The chills and shrills of October are finally upon us. Its time to rejoice in pumpkin patches, burn tongues on apple cider, and abandon those ‘summer body’ plans for milkyways. Costumes will be bought, pumpkins will be carved, and scary movies will be watched, all before the clock hits midnight on October 31st. Assuming you already have an idea of a costume and killer pumpkin-carving design, what movies are worth your time this year? Which ones will leave you awake for weeks, or neurotically checking under your bed? Here’s a quick list of three movies you need to watch, then regret watching, this Halloween.

If you have never seen this movie, what hole are you living in!? Scream,

Directed by legendary horror director Wes Craven, has become a cult-like classic since its release in 1996. With its elements of humor, witty characters, and plethora of pop-up scenes, this combination makes for a movie that’s scary but still enjoyable. It’s the type of movie where you latch onto a character emotionally, only to see them murdered 10 minutes later… but lets be honest, isn’t this predictable by now? Featuring actors like Drew Barrymore and David Arquette early in their careers, its fun and nostalgic to watch these established actors when their stardom was just beginning.

  The Silence of the Lambs

Scare Rating: 9 out of 10

After watching this, you’ll most likely become irrationally scared of everything, but its still a great film! Jodie Foster plays an up-and-coming FBI trainee interrogating an immeasurably insane yet intelligent serial killer, in order to maintain information on another equally crazy serial killer… a terrifying scenario to see on-screen. This movie will trick your mind and constantly keep you in fear and confusion, paralyzing you to keep watching. With an average rating of 95% on rotten tomatoes, you can be sure that you’ll be viewing a movie with a great and horrifying plot.

Hocus Pocus

Scare Rating: Non-existent

If you’re not up for the intensely scary, Hocus Pocus is the movie for you. A Disney friendly film, Hocus Pocus is lighthearted and gets you into the Halloween mood. Taking place in Salem, Massachusetts, three evil witches come back to life and bring havoc to a group of teens on Halloween night. Full of laughs and a brief musical number performed by Bette Midler, how could you not love this movie? Every year it runs non-stop on TV channels like ABC family, so make sure you schedule time to give it a watch! You’ll save yourself from not being able to sleep at night, and find a perfect film to re-watch year after year.
