Becca’s Closet: Get Ready For the Night of Nights

The racks of dresses that fill the chapter’s closet.

Autumn Samuels, Club Liaison

If you are anything like the members of High School Musical, you may be thinking about prom already. The fact is that in only eight short months you may be attending the anticipated day where you will want to wear a gorgeous dress. Girls dream of this moment not only their entire high school career, but their entire lives. In fact, it is up there with their wedding day. Why though?  Well, simply put, it is the fashion.

For every girl, prom is a time when she can play real live dress up. She can put on an ornamented gown and dance like Cinderella at the ball. However, prom cannot be experienced by everyone, not necessarily because of any evil step sisters, but rather because of the impending dollar signs that accompany prom, including the cost of buying a dress. But Becca’s Closet can help with a flick of a wand and the magic words, “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo….”

Well, not exactly.

Becca’s Closet does work its magic like a fairy godmother does, just without the dancing pumpkin carriage and talking mice. Becca’s Closet, here at Freehold Township, works to help less fortunate girls discover their dream of prom through dress, shoes, and accessory donations. It is a nonprofit national organization started by Rebecca Kurtman with a goal to make prom possible for any girl.

The chapter at FTHS focuses primarily on the girls located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. From the generous donations of many, it has collected a closet of over a thousand dresses where any princess can be sure to find her prefect attire for prom. The magic closet has anything from short, long, printed, ruffled, sequined dresses to large full-skirted dresses that are truly fit for Cinderella’s ball.

Becca’s Closet’s main purpose here at Township is to make the girl looking for a dress feel like she was in a true boutique shopping with her family members. After making an appointment by emailing us, she remains anonymous to the Becca’s Closet volunteers. When she arrives the day of her appointment, she gets to wander through the racks of dresses picking out as many as she desires to try on just as if she was shopping in a real store. She gets to try the dresses on in front of a large mirror until she finds that special dress.

The Freehold Township Becca’s Closet chapter is always looking to help girls discover their dream of prom. If you are someone who looks forward to prom but does not think that it is an obtainable wish, please contact us on our website beccasclosetfths.weebly.com or through email at [email protected]. Similarly, if you have a passion for fashion and helping people, come to our first interest meeting on Wednesday, November 12th.  Hope to see you there!
