Song of the Week: Coming Over by James Hersey

Melissa Ng, Music Columnist

You know those nights where you’re alone in your room listening to music at 3 in the morning? You don’t even realize how late it is until you look over at the clock and realize you should be asleep, but your thoughts are still racing. Then there’s that one song that plays on shuffle and hits you hard, provoking a wide range of emotions that leaves you sitting there wondering, “what the hell is my life?” Yeah, I’ve been down that road way too many times. If you want a song that’ll make it feel as though everything is falling apart but coming together at the same time, “Coming Over” by James Hersey (Dillon Francis, Kygo Remix) is the song for you.

James Hersey is a mixture of acoustic guitars and electro-pop. He is an extremely talented songwriter, singer and producer from Vienna, Austria. He is still emerging onto the music scene and is not as known as those who remix his work so make sure to give his other music a try! Dillon Francis on the other hand is a prominent electro house DJ. The Los Angeles native rose to fame after he gained the attention of producer, Diplo. Kygo, another DJ, born in Norway, is known for his tropical beats that are more focused on relaxation and brightness.

“Coming Over” is literal chillstep music artistry. Hersey’s smooth voice flows freely until interrupted by a beat drop that’s equivalent to fireworks over the beach on a perfect summer night. There could not have been a more perfect trio to collaborate on one song. The song is filled with organic synth beats and perfect pitch shifts. Whether it be your summer fling, long term partner, or the person you’ve liked since 5th grade, these lyrics speak perfectly to any relationship.
