Song of the Week: “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” by Tame Impala

Let’s expand to a different realm: psychedelic rock. This genre of music emerged in the 1960s and was inspired by the mind altering culture due to the experiences of hallucinogens. It became the soundtrack to the counterculture movement and still lives on today. The modern pioneer of psychedelic rock is Tame Impala.

The founder of Tame Impala is Kevin Parker, who writes, records, performs and produces the music. Regarding discography, the band has three studio albums with the second one, Lonerism, reaching platinum status in Australia and winning a Grammy Award for the Best Alternative Music Album

“Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” by Tame Impala creates an image just as the title describes; it literally feels as though you’re floating through a vortex backwards. The song sounds as though watercolour and time zones clash together; you twist and turn in different directions. My interpretation of this song is that you try to move on or step forward, but you keep getting caught in the past. Tame Impala creates a laid back feel at their shows, with a trippy stage presence letting colours flow through the screens behind them and songs that mesmerize the audience.
