Song of the Week: “Waiting for Love” by Avicii

Melissa Ng, Columnist

The first time I heard this song was at Tilly’s, a store in the mall, where I am also no longer employed at (it’s a sensitive topic). For some reason it was on their holiday playlist and I heard it maybe five times per shift. I decided I really liked the song the 14th time it played so I looked it up; now “Waiting for Love” by Avicii is this week’s song choice.

As discussed in my other article (“Bloom by Odesza”), the subgenre of EDM Avicii falls into is House music. Avicii, or Tim Bergling, is a Swedish electronic musician, DJ and record producer. He began his career by skillfully promoting himself on music blogs and is now one of the most prominent producers on the Swedish House scene. Fellow DJ, Tiesto, noticed his huge following and invited him to perform at a weekly residency in Ibiza. Since then his fame level has skyrocketed, he has won numerous awards and continues to dominate the charts.

“Waiting for Love” by Avicii is guaranteed to be a dance floor anthem. The lyrics are actually hypocritical, the verses are hopeful and speaks of being strong and optimistic, “And if there’s love in this life, there’s no obstacle”. Yet as the song continues, the chorus sounds defeated as it details every day of the week, “Monday left me broken/ Tuesday I was through with hoping.” It begins with an aggressive piano melody and ends with a process of lulls, buildups and riffs. This song will leave you feeling jubilant and will, “have no trouble finding success both on the radio and on the festival circuit.”
