“The Importance of Being Earnest” Wows Audiences

Time after time, the Patriot Players continue to entertain the school with their incredibly talented actors and amazing plays. Well, they have outdone themselves once again.

The play, The Importance of Being Earnest, is about Jack Worthing, a successful, wealthy man and his extremely witty friend, Algernon Moncrieff. Both men have made up imaginary people in order to get away from their normal lives. Jack lies to his friends and his ward, Cecily Cardew (granddaughter to the old man who adopted Jack as a baby), about a brother named Earnest. But, when Jack is in the city and away from the people he knows in the country, he refers to himself as Earnest, and that is what his friends in the city know him as. Algernon made up a man by the name of Bunbury, whom he often pretends is ill so he could get out of going to social events.

While both of these men go on with their lives as usual, they encounter a bit of a problem. Jack is in love with Algernon’s cousin, Gwendolen Fairfax, whom he intends to propose to. Not only is Gwendolen’s mother, Lady Bracknell, not a fan of that idea, but Gwendolen is in love with the name “Earnest,” which is actually not his name. Algernon also gets himself into trouble by visiting Jack’s house and pretending to be Jack’s fake brother, Earnest. Cecily, over time, has fallen in love with the brother that her guardian has made up, and when Algernon shows up, she assumes that he is the man that she has been longing for. She too is very fond of the name Earnest, which again, is not his name.

The actors and actresses that presented this play did an incredible job. They were witty and funny, and they put on quite a show. In only three scenes, the thespians were able to bring these characters to life. Acting with a British accent is hard enough, but it was evident that a lot of time was put in to this production to make sure that is was seamless.

The set and run crew should definitely give themselves a pat on the back for the great set and props. The set was beautifully made and used a great variety of essential props.

The play was great and was thoroughly entertaining. Everyone who was involved should feel proud of the production they put on.
